PMVA Certification Requirements 

To qualify for the PMVA exam, candidates must meet both education and experience requirements. 

  • Have successfully graduated college/university in engineering, architecture, economics, sustainability, finance, building technology, HVAC, or related (requires a copy of the diploma or other relevant credentials)
  • Work in the field for at least two years – M&V, energy, energy efficiency, government, ESCO, utility, financial institution or related – should be advising/developing/implementing energy efficiency programs, energy projects, financing of energy projects, energy management, energy audits (provide contact details for reference and also a short description of duties)

PMVA-Associate Status:
Note: If a candidate passes the exam but does not meet the experience requirement, they receive PMVA-Associate status and have four years to qualify fully.


Pre-Course Preparation

Before attending the PMVA training course, candidates must complete the following:

  • Introduction to Statistics for M&V – A self-paced online course (available via the EVO training platform) covering essential statistical concepts used in M&V. Access is provided at least one month before training.
  • Pre-Course Study Pack – Provided upon registration via the ECMS platform, including recommended readings, IPMVP guidelines, M&V plan templates, and sample exercises. Candidates are expected to review these materials before attending the course.
    • What is ECMS? The EVO Course Management System (ECMS) is the official platform where candidates access training materials, certification details, and online exams.
  • Equipment & System Check – Candidates must ensure they have a stable internet connection (minimum 10 Mbps), a webcam, and access to the ECMS online exam platform. A system test must be completed before the exam to verify compatibility with the Honorlock proctoring system.

Training & Course Structure 

The PMVA training course consists of 3.0 days of instructor-led sessions, followed by an exam, covering key competencies in M&V: 

Course Modules 

  1. Introduction to M&V – Principles of energy savings measurement and M&V fundamentals.
  2. Key Concepts – Understanding baseline adjustments, uncertainty, and verification methods.
  3. M&V Planning – Developing effective M&V plans for energy efficiency projects.
  4. Statistical Analysis – Applying data analytics and uncertainty assessment in M&V.
  5. IPMVP Options A-D – Selecting the appropriate M&V method for different project types.
  6. Real-World Case Studies – Practical ESCO, government, and financial sector applications.

Training Format: Live instructor-led sessions (in-person or online). 
Pre-Course Requirement: Candidates must complete the self-paced “Introduction to Statistics for M&V” course (available via ECMS) before attending the training course.
Additional Resources: Upon registration, candidates receive digital study guides, questions, and case studies, accessible via the ECMS platform.

PMVA Certification Exam 

Multiple-choice format covering: 

  • IPMVP fundamentals 
  • M&V principles 
  • Statistics and data analysis 
  • Passing Score: 70% 
  • Online Monitored Exam via Honorlock (ID verification and webcam required) 
  • Mock test available before the exam for candidates to test their system and familiarise themselves with the exam format (not graded). 
  • Full exam preparation guide, including Knowledge Test questions and exam monitoring (proctoring) details will be provided at the end of the second day of the course..
  • Exam Duration: 4 hours 
  • Exam must be taken within one month of completing the training  

Post-Certification & Renewal 

The PMVA certification is valid for 36 months (3 years).

Renewal Requirements:

Candidates must demonstrate continued engagement in M&V by providing proof of:

  • 18+ months of M&V-related work experience.
  • Two completed M&V plans, with the candidate’s name included as proof of contribution.

If candidates do not meet the above M&V plan requirement, they can renew by completing 14 qualifying hours (QH) of professional development:

  • Webinars: Attending or presenting M&V-related sessions.
  • Publications: Writing technical articles on M&V.
  • Training Contributions: Teaching or developing M&V courses.

(14 QH = two full days of qualifying activities.)
