PMVE Certification Requirements
To qualify for the PMVE exam, candidates must meet both education and experience requirements.
- Educational Background: Possess a technical degree in engineering, architecture, sustainability, finance, building technology, or a related discipline.
- Professional Experience: Have a minimum of two years of relevant professional experience in M&V or energy efficiency, such as roles within ESCOs, utilities, government agencies, consultancy firms, or project implementation teams.
- Training Prerequisite: Complete the M&V Planning in Practice training course delivered by an EVO-accredited provider.
Alternative Certification Pathway
- Hold a current PMVA certification.
- OR have completed the M&V Fundamentals and IPMVP® course and passed the related exam with a score of 70% or higher within the last 3 years.
- OR possess a prior EVO-recognized M&V certification that demonstrates equivalent knowledge and successful completion of a qualifying exam (e.g., IPMVP-based training or certification acquired within the last 3 years). Candidates opting for this route must submit evidence of certification and exam results via the ECMS platform for approval.
PMVE-Associate Status:
Note: If a candidate passes the exam but does not meet the full experience requirement, they receive PMVE-Associate status and have four years to qualify fully.
Pre-Course Preparation
Before attending the PMVE training course, candidates must complete the following:
- Have completed the M&V Fundamentals and IPMVP training (usually through PMVA certification).
- Ensure their ECMS profile is fully updated and complete.
- Review sample M&V plans and documentation (shared through ECMS upon registration).
- What is ECMS? The EVO Course Management System (ECMS) is the official platform where candidates access training materials, certification details, and online exams.
- Equipment & System Check – Candidates must ensure they have a stable internet connection (minimum 10 Mbps), a webcam, and access to the ECMS online exam platform. A system test must be completed before the exam to verify compatibility with the Honorlock proctoring system.
Training & Course Structure
The PMVE training is a practical, instructor-led course focusing on real-world M&V execution. The training lasts 2 full days, followed by a separately scheduled exam, taken online, proctored remotely via Honorlock.

- M&V Calculations in Practice – Baselines, adjustments, and savings validation

Additional Resources: Upon registration, candidates receive digital study guides, templates, questions, and case studies, accessible via the ECMS platform.
PMVE Certification Exam
The PMVE exam is a hands-on, practical assessment that evaluates your ability to prepare, apply, and critique real-world M&V plans in alignment with IPMVP®.
Format: Practical exam (5 hours)
Location: Online via Honorlock (default format) – a secure, remote proctoring system
Evaluation: Manually assessed by an independent EVO instructor, with written feedback provided
What You’ll Do:
- Develop key elements of a compliant M&V Plan
- Perform baseline adjustments and statistical calculations
- Review and critique existing M&V plans for IPMVP adherence
Passing Score: 70%
Exam Window: Must be completed within one month of finishing the course
Before the Exam:
- You will receive access to a system check and mock test session via ECMS, allowing you to verify your webcam, browser, internet speed (10 Mbps minimum), and device setup.
- You must complete the Honorlock authentication process, which includes ID verification, a room scan, and agreement to the EVO Candidate Confidentiality Agreement.
- An exam preparation guide will be provided at the end of the training course, including example questions, plan templates, and evaluation criteria.
Post-Certification & Renewal
The PMVE certification is valid for 36 months (3 years).
Renewal Requirements:
Candidates must demonstrate continued engagement in M&V by providing proof of:
- Active involvement in M&V during at least 18 months of the certification period.
- Preparation or verification of at least 2 IPMVP-compliant M&V plans.
- OR complete 14 qualifying hours (QH) of professional development, including:
- Publishing technical articles
- Delivering or attending M&V training sessions
- Presenting at webinars/conferences
- Participating in relevant research
Missed renewals can be rectified within 6 years through revalidation. Beyond this, re-certification is required.
